Get Your Heart Pumping With These Singapore Auction Sites

by Dexter Damien Chan on August 6, 2010

How would you like to get an Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB for just SGD$7.75?

And the phone is totally new, no manufacturer defect, comes with local warranty and ready to use upon inserting your SIM Card?

You are not reading it wrong, you just need to pay $7.75 and the phone is even delivered free to your door step!

Not your cup of tea? How about:

- Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5V Camera for just S$27.20

- Nintendo Wii for just S$8.55

- Tiffany & Co. Open Heart Necklace for S$43.35 (for the Ladies)

As mentioned, these items are all new! The savings you can expect is easily more than 50% discount off the usual retail price.

If you are getting excited of what I am about to share and you do not need me to go through the details, then you should click over to:

>> GleeBid

>> Sold.sg

How Do These Local Auction Sites Work?

Apparently both sites run on the same software script (which I have no idea, if you are keen to start your own, but if you do know, this can be a lucrative business opportunity).

Signing up for an account is free! And no strings attached. To make you sign up fast, you will get 10 bids free from GleeBid and if I can remember correctly 5 bids free from Sold.sg.

Things To Note For The Given Free Bids

For Sold.sg

If you are a slow learner, you do have to take note that the bids given by Sold.sg has an expiry date of 1 week upon activating your account. If you do not use it, you will see these Bids being deleted from your account (that’s my case).

So if you see something that you like and near to it’s Ending Soon period, start bidding for it. You may just be lucky enough to get it. Else you have to spend money on getting a token package from them.

For GleeBid

Though the Company has no stated that there’s a expiry date for them yet, it may just be imposed soon.

When It’s Time To Start Bidding

If you are used to the eBay style of bidding where you can start setting up a high bid price and scared off those who do not dare to out-bid you, this is not the case for both Auction Sites.

Basically they work on the basis on incremental bids (e.g. price will increase by $0.02 each time for one particular auction whereas the other may increase by $0.15 each time).

And the difference between both sites is that the incremental bid for Sold.sg is tentatively higher as compared to GleeBid. But there’s a good and bad side – you may end up paying slightly more for the item but you get to end the Auction earlier (and rest earlier). So depending on your lifestyle, both Auction Sites will get to serve you well.

Then there’s the countdown timer that will get your heart pumping especially as it reaches towards the End where you will see a sudden pause on the site – then the price jumped up by a significant amount and the time delayed by few more seconds. You may have to take note that you should not bid at the 0.01 second remaining as the server may not capture your bid and you lose to your competitor.

Any strategy to outbid the rest?

My suggestion is to know who you are up against. Most of the bidders are using the Automatic Bidding system and they will end the moment the amount of tokens run out. This is the time where you can take advantage. Do take note of those hidden bidders who will sneak up upon you as well.

Practice makes perfect but at the cost of buying Tokens…

The Cost Of Buying Tokens

The cost of a Token is at $0.75 for Sold.sg and $0.50 for GleeBid and you have to buy these Tokens in a package, minimum is 20 tokens for Sold.sg and 30 tokens for GleeBid.

And just a word of caution, do not spend too much money on these auctions and ended up disrupting your daily lifestyle!

These information should be enough for you to get started on both sites, but if you need to have more information, both sites have a good and thorough FAQ section and I believe it will answer any of your queries!

Have fun bidding for your favorite items and I am off to out-bid for a iPhone 4 32GB!

Actually, they are not running on the same web application.
And I prefer the functionality of sold.sg.

Is it for real?

Hi John Tan, till date, from what I know, no one has reviewed that it’s fake. Gleebid expanded into Malaysia and seems to be doing well. There are some video testimonial on youtube which you may wish to check it out as well.

Erm, Business Model wise, it’s not something new.

But… if there’s definitely a bad side to it especially if you are going for the popular items like iPad or iPhone – your bids and credits go down the drain real fast. So if you are serious into joining such sites and unsure, try going for the small items first.

They also give away free account with a few bid credits to let you get started. You can use that to see if its worth your future investments.

Lastly, I am not their spokesperson. And I do not really get anything out from my recommendations. Hope this helps!

I am very skeptical about http://www.sold.sg, having had a bad first-hand experience.

I went all out to bid for some of the items i liked, but not once, not twice, but on THREE occasions my final bid was NOT recognised and it went to the bidder before me!

i was very angry and frustrated because it happened consecutively and wrote to sold.sg but they just shrugged it off and did not offer any assistance.

i wonder how this could come about and if this is indeed a case of “shilling”or planting stooges as some other reviewers and users mentioned on other forums?

Does anyone know what can be done in such cases? i feel RIPPED OFF and do not wish to pay my credit card company for the tokens i purchases through paypal as i am questioning their integrity and authenticity!

Hi Lady Newton, thanks for sharing your experience and I am sorry to hear about what you are currently going through.

And I do hope there will be some other readers who can come forward and provide you with a solution on your current situation.

I do not know if raising a case with CASE or a dispute with PayPal may help to rectify this problem but definitely worth a try.

Hey, was looking for tips to bid and happen to chance upon this site. I have been using http://www.forbid.sg for some time now. I have not really tried the rest of the sites other than just taking a look at them as my friend had recommended me to forbid.sg. I think the layout of forbid.sg seems pretty easy for navigation and user-friendly if you guys are thinking of looking for an alternative. :D Have won a few items at really low prices and still happy with it now. Haha. :D Hope this helps!

Hey Laci, thanks for your recommendation and good to know that you have won quite a fair bit of items on the Auction Sites. Just wondering if you can contribute a few pictures of you together with your wins to help assure some of the readers that these sites are still okay* to take part in.
