Looking Back In 2011

Looking back… 2011 has been a good year for me in terms of my online business(es), especially when I am still running all my blogs all by myself. Monthly income generated by these blogs though may not be enough to feed a family but to me, it’s a positive sign that there’s money to be made online and can be a good income opportunity on top of my day job.

A General Overview Of My Online Businesses/Blogs In 2011

In 2011, I have increased my portfolio of blogs to around 12 (and still managing them on my own) – with:

• Four blogs dealing with Affiliate Marketing & Internet Marketing promoting online services and products, e.g. ebooks, software, scripts, video training courses, resale rights products
• One blog promoting Premium WordPress Themes and Premium WordPress Plugins
• One blog promoting Mobile Phone Apps and Developer Scripts for Android Phones and iPhones
• One blog promoting Weight Loss Tips and Weight Loss Products
• One blog promoting Learning & Development Toys for Children
• One blog with a general focus on Financial Planning & Financial Education
• One Flash Game Site
• Two Article Directories

These are the majority of the sites that I have spent quite a fair time on… and there are a few other sites that I have not been able to focus on, namely, sites focusing on health and online fashion. I hope with 2012, I can spend more time on all of my sites. And if I can convince myself I may get a Virtual Assistant to help me out.

In June 2011, engineers in Singapore took a big step into the future when they launched an electric vehicle test-bed right in the heart of Singapore. The goal of the test-bed, created by a government task force including the Energy Market Authority and the Land Transport Authority, is to determine what works best when it comes to electric vehicles and charging station infrastructure. Being a highly urban area with plenty of city roads to work with, Singapore is an ideal testing location for this technology before unveiling it for the general public to purchase and utilize.

This is important technology to begin testing because electric vehicles offer consumers a new option when it comes to reducing energy and, of course, combating the ever-rising cost of fuel. The test-bed is providing an opportunity for Singaporeans to see which electric cars will work best in mainstream society and just how quickly and efficiently these vehicles will recharge. In some vehicles, the braking mechanism produces kinetic energy that automatically recharges the battery. Other vehicles include high-efficiency charging systems that allow them to fully recharge in an hour or less.

Another highlight of the test-bed in Singapore is that it will help determine where to install charging stations and how many are necessary to support widespread use of electric vehicles in the area. This is an important infrastructural aspect for engineers to consider, as the emergence of electric vehicles will be a game changer for many businesses. The current test-bed model allows test drivers to have charging stations located near their homes or places of business, which cost them $180 per month to utilize.

While engineers still have a ways to go in the mainstream development of electric vehicles, Singapore is taking a big step into the future by using an experimental test-bed to see first-hand how this technology will measure up in our busy world. In the meantime, drivers should continue to take proper care of their current gas-powered vehicles in order to maximize their performance and minimize their environmental impact. Stop by your local Mobil lube change center and store for regular tune-ups, and insist on premium products like Mobil fully-synthetic oil to keep your engine running as smoothly and cleanly as possible. This will help increase your car’s efficiency and reduce its polluting carbon emissions while we wait to see how the electric vehicle test-bed pans out in Singapore.

Yesterday (12/12) was the day that my sites went down (and up), along with it, the opportunity to generate some income from the various Ads on my site but nonetheless it was a good experience learned and also a big thank you to my web hosting company who helped me resolve most of the issues. 

What Went Wrong With My Blog Sites

I am currently running (and have installed) quite a number of blog sites with the shared web hosting package that allows me to run unlimited domains (and sites) within a hosting space of 5GB.

Part of my online income streams that I am currently having is to do reviews of various marketable products like eBooks, Web Templates, WordPress Plugins, Amazon Products and many others. And the root cause for the sites going down is due to the installation of my WordPress Plugins.

It seemed that after running one year of blogging of numerous reviews, I have managed to install quite a number of WordPress Plugins which are left very much “running on its own” on my various blog sites.

And yesterday was the day that one of these mysterious WordPress Plugins decide to create havoc and slow down the whole server (and I understood from the web hosting guys that the alarm went off and that must be quite a situation, oops!)

Solutions Suggested

Facing such a situation, there were quite a few solutions suggested (and one of them being quite an expensive one):

• The first option – To upgrade my shared web hosting package to either VPS Hosting, Business Hosting or Dedicated Server Hosting – and the cost involved is from the current $11 per month to around $80 per month… my heart started to sink… but if you are serious about online marketing, these are the options that you need to choose as your online business gets bigger,

• The second option – to block out my sites, release the sites one by one and have it monitored by the web hosting guys. Purpose is to find out which is the site that’s causing the server to overload. At the same time, I have to install this wordpress plugin (and it’s highly recommended to keep your blog sites running efficiently) – WP Super Cache.

As cost is involved and due to my limited budget, I decide to go for the second option. Lucky enough, I was able to detect the culprit and have my sites restored late last night.

What You Can Learn From Here If You Are A WordPress Blogger

1. Maintaining your Blog. Make it a habit to maintain your blog. If you have installed plugins over the course of your blogging, make sure that it’s still relevant over time, if not, just delete it or find a better one to replace it. If you have a responsive web hosting company, you may wish to drop them an email to notify you if they notice any signs of server overloading. This can help you to save a lot of time and minimize any downtime.

2. Consider Investing Into Better Hosting Package. If you are seeing some form of online success and generated consistent income,  you may wish to consider getting into a better hosting package like VPS hosting. This is definitely one option that I have to consider in the coming months.

Something That I Like About Yipit

I was just surfing around and looking at those many Daily Deals sites that are coming out and finding ways to give my emails away… and the only issue that I have with most of these sites is that they send all sorts of daily deals to my inbox and those that are relevant to me are sometimes buried in one of those deal boxes…

For Yipit… the initial signing up part is kind of refreshing because this site allows me to choose deals that are relevant to my interests. Just check out this screenshot:

This is the part that I like because it seems like Yipit cares about what you like and they will send deals that are related to your interests… and they even…

Yup! Yipit allows you to input locations (deals around a particular place, e.g. workplace or your home) so that they are send you deals that you can apply at a place that’s near you!

Most of the Daily Deal Sites that I am in… have a lot of deals that are located in the Western Region when I am working in the Central and staying in the North East Region. Less chances for me to go there despite the fact that Singapore is actually very small and travelling around is not that time-consuming at all.

But nonetheless, it’s good to have such a site like Yipit around, and I do hope that some of the daily deal sites can have this feature of letting me sort through the categories or the places that I get to see special deals…

Why do I say so? You are basically giving your precious contact information like Name and Precious Email Address in exchange for a chance to “win $10,000 worth of vouchers” and also a ton of other emails that will be sent out by their “partners”.

Other Signs That I Feel That The Site Is Spammy

Once you are over at that site, you will be hit by Pop-Ups. And in case that you do not know, these Pop-Ups will let this company earn some pocket money in exchange for the views generated by these Pop-Ups.

And if the vouchers are not attracting you, you may be tempted to hit this image button:

The next moment… you will be presented with a chance to “win an iPad 2″ and amidst those fine little prints, you get these chunk of little requirements:

You will need to answer a series of questions that cost you $3.00 for each question sent and if you feel so smart, you may as well be spending your way up to the maximum $500 – and you are already paying for half of an iPad 2. Bring in another person who is smart in answering, and that iPad 2 is already paid for…

And a few more… and they will be contributing to the annual revenue of the company for that year… also not forgetting your precious phone number is already being released to the partners who will try to contact you to entice you to get more of their stuffs…

Why Am I Highlighting About This Site

Seriously I do not believe that there is such a thing as Free Lunch. Creating such a gimmick site so that you will be willing to give away your email address (and most likely you will give away an email address that you will be accessing most of the time because you do not want to “miss out” in being a “winner”) is not going to do you good.

You are just making life easier for that company and their partners because they get to collect your email address without doing anything that’s beneficial. In return, you will be receiving more and more emails from them.

I would rather join sites like EmailCashPro that pays you to read emails. Though the earnings from each email is little, at least you are still seeing some form of returns with each read and with each click.

I May Be Wrong…

Like I have said, I think that this kind of site is spammy but to you, you may have gotten some real good deals out from it. If you are one of those lucky fews, I do hope that you can share your comments here and let others know more about it.

If you do agree that this kind of site is spammy, I do hope that you will not join and you can ask you friends not to do so as well. And given a few months, this kind of site may just disappear like those many others.
