Memberships are everywhere and almost any outlets in a shopping centre have their own of membership. And I would like to share my personal shopping and membership experience with Two Stores – The Challenger (Electronics, Gadgets and Computers) and Aussino (Bed Linen)

The Challenger Membership

This Membership is supposed to give you a lot of cash savings by giving you Member’s Price for majority of the items.

You pay, if not wrong, $20 for 1 year membership and $30 for 2 years membership. And there’s a special catch to it – if there’s no $50 savings, you will get $40 refunded.

In other words, even if you do not shop much, you will get a $40 back. There’s definitely some Terms and Conditions to be applied so if you are keen to know more in details, either you go down to the store to know more or head over to the Corporate Site.

Overall I would say that it’s a good deal but my decision not to get it lies with the Sales Assistant over at the Store. And this is what happened, in sequence,

1. I picked up two Items with Total Cash Savings (as a Member) of $16. Decide to head over to the Cashier to make payment.

2. The Sales Assistant saw me and approached me to ask if I need any assistance. I say no. Before she (yup, it’s a Lady) went away, she highlighted that there’s a Membership Offer that will give me Cash Savings and how I will enjoy the $40 refund even if I do not shop much. I declined the offer and decided to walk around the Store.

3. I came to another corner and there she is again… Waaaa… She highlighted that it would be beneficial for me to get the membership. I declined further…

4. I walked to another corner and there she is at another corner, looking (can I say staring?) at me! And she only gave me up when there’s another Customer needing her help.

5. I was making my payment and the Cashier looked at the Items and told me the benefits of getting the Membership again. Oh my… and the Cashier even sighed that I did not decide to get the Membership to enjoy the Savings.

I do not know what do the Sales Assistants get from promoting the Membership. Commission? Keep up with their KPIs? But I do know that I do not like their way of promoting the benefits of the membership. The benefits are good but it got worse because of this “High Pressure” promotion.

And the good (or should it be bad) thing is that you will get the same kind of treatment every time that you are at the Store.

My Suggestion:

Ask the Customers if they have heard of the Membership, if yes, ask if they have signed up. If not, highlight the main benefits and ask if keen to sign up.

If the first instance is no, the most give a Brochure with the Sales Assistant’s Code and a kind gesture that you will be around to answer their queries on the Membership or on any items. Then leave the Customer to shop in peace. Don’t even try to sneak a peek at the Customer. This will turn off the mood for Retail Therapy.

If the Customer does approach you back with any queries, this is where you re-highlight the benefits.

Lastly, try to understand that most Customers are educated and they do understand the Benefits of any Membership. There’s no need for so many reminders!

The Aussino Experience

This is the place where I do most of my shopping for Bed Linen and Quilt Cover. The shopping experience is pleasant as well as the Sales Assistants leave you to do your shopping and they are around to answer any queries if there’s a need to.

The Membership was promoted over at the Sales Counter and it’s $20 for a lifetime membership. And you get a bath towel worth $13.90 and also $20 vouchers to be used in the next shopping. This is a good deal as well!

I got the Membership because the promotion is gentle – the benefits are highlighted, I know the cost, and there’s no urgency from the Sales Assistant to ask me to get the Membership. But it’s highlighted that the savings will be good but the choice is definitely yours.

No Hard-Selling. No High-Pressure Promotion. This Membership deal is closed on the spot. And a good sign is that this approach does attract many other Customers to get the membership as well.

How Do These Local Auction Sites Work?

Apparently both sites run on the same software script (which I have no idea, if you are keen to start your own, but if you do know, this can be a lucrative business opportunity).

Signing up for an account is free! And no strings attached. To make you sign up fast, you will get 10 bids free from GleeBid and if I can remember correctly 5 bids free from Sold.sg.

Things To Note For The Given Free Bids

For Sold.sg

If you are a slow learner, you do have to take note that the bids given by Sold.sg has an expiry date of 1 week upon activating your account. If you do not use it, you will see these Bids being deleted from your account (that’s my case).

So if you see something that you like and near to it’s Ending Soon period, start bidding for it. You may just be lucky enough to get it. Else you have to spend money on getting a token package from them.

For GleeBid

Though the Company has no stated that there’s a expiry date for them yet, it may just be imposed soon.

When It’s Time To Start Bidding

If you are used to the eBay style of bidding where you can start setting up a high bid price and scared off those who do not dare to out-bid you, this is not the case for both Auction Sites.

Basically they work on the basis on incremental bids (e.g. price will increase by $0.02 each time for one particular auction whereas the other may increase by $0.15 each time).

And the difference between both sites is that the incremental bid for Sold.sg is tentatively higher as compared to GleeBid. But there’s a good and bad side – you may end up paying slightly more for the item but you get to end the Auction earlier (and rest earlier). So depending on your lifestyle, both Auction Sites will get to serve you well.

Then there’s the countdown timer that will get your heart pumping especially as it reaches towards the End where you will see a sudden pause on the site – then the price jumped up by a significant amount and the time delayed by few more seconds. You may have to take note that you should not bid at the 0.01 second remaining as the server may not capture your bid and you lose to your competitor.

Any strategy to outbid the rest?

My suggestion is to know who you are up against. Most of the bidders are using the Automatic Bidding system and they will end the moment the amount of tokens run out. This is the time where you can take advantage. Do take note of those hidden bidders who will sneak up upon you as well.

Practice makes perfect but at the cost of buying Tokens…

The Cost Of Buying Tokens

The cost of a Token is at $0.75 for Sold.sg and $0.50 for GleeBid and you have to buy these Tokens in a package, minimum is 20 tokens for Sold.sg and 30 tokens for GleeBid.

And just a word of caution, do not spend too much money on these auctions and ended up disrupting your daily lifestyle!

To all Book Lovers, here’s a personal post of how you can get a good deal out of buying books from:

- Major Bookstores like Borders, Kinokuniya,

- Online stores like Opentrolley.com.sg, Acmamall.com, Amazon.com, BookDepository.co.uk

- Events like MPH Book Sale & Borders Book Sale (check from Singapore Expo website)

I have done my research after visiting these sites and places and here’s a brief summary of how to get a good deal when you have the crave to read fiction books and selected non-fiction books like on Business, Marketing, Personal Development, Recipe!

Major Bookstores Like Borders & Kinokuniya

Two of the largest bookstores and biggest collections of books in Singapore, offers Membership and they gave occasional discounts on books from 20% to 35%.

Should You Get The Membership?

For Borders. The price for their books are usually 10% more than Kinokuniya’s. Therefore paying for the membership just to enjoy the 10% off is really like slapping yourself. But if you do eat from the restaurant over at WheelLock’s, you will get 10% off the bill (that’s removing the service charge) thus this deal of getting their membership is sweetened up a bit.

But… If you are a frequent buyer of books in quantities like 3 -4 at a time, then I would still say to go for it because of the frequent discounts given – up to 35% (+10% from the membership). Read more below.

For Kinokuniya. I would safely say that their price is one of the lowest or competitive among all the major bookstores in Singapore. And they have some books and magazine titles from Japan and Hong Kong that Borders do not carry.

Therefore if you like the Ambience, The Other Titles, and do not mind the lack of frequent discount, then I would suggest you to get the Membership.

My Verdict: Get The Border’s Membership. This is because of the many Discounts that Borders give.

How About The Discounts?

For Borders. Get the Discounts send to you through Email. And you can signup from this site. Sample Discount:

For Kinokuniya. You have to check out the newspaper and cut out the coupons to enjoy.

I would strongly recommend you to go for the Borders’ as their discounts are more frequent as compared to Kinokuniya’s. And in terms of discount value, Borders would usually offer more.

My Verdict: Signup For The Borders’ Discount.

Online stores like Acmamall.com, Opentrolley.com.sg, Amazon.com, BookDepository.co.uk

In comparison, Online Book stores have a lower price on books as compared to Major Bookstores. They also offer certain books that are not offered in Major Bookstores.

Only factor that you need to consider this option is that you have to wait for the book to arrive (could be up to a week).

So if you do not mind this, then you should consider shopping from this option. And in today’s time and technology, it’s safe to make your credit card purchase from these online stores.

So Who Give The Most Discounts? The Ranking & The Pros and Cons…

1. Amazon.com

Amazon.com gives the most discount for the same titles under this three online stores. There are more titles offered as compared to the other two. But only issue that’s stopping most Singaporeans from shopping there is the Delivery Charges.

How most people minimize the Delivery Charges is through Sprees (buying in bulk through a collection of different orders) and you can easily get into an Amazon.com spree just by doing a search online.

2. BookDepository.co.uk

After a recent positive experience with them, this site actually offers the next lower price after Amazon.com (also because of the current exchange rate) and another plus point is that they offer free delivery worldwide (you save on the delivery charge)!

But only thing to note is that they may not have that comprehensive collection as compared to Amazon.com.

3. Acmamall.com & OpenTrolley.com.sg

If there’s no Amazon.com and BookDepository.co.uk, then I would safely say that this two online bookstore has the best price as compared to all the bookstores in Singapore. But too bad… there’s the existence of the above two sites.

Each site offers their own perks and promotions (e.g. Limited Period Free Delivery, Credit Card Promotion, Get Discount with Minimum Buy, etc). But all in all, the price difference between the two sites is small.

My Verdict: If you are not into Sprees and buying one or two books at a time, then I would say to go for BookDepository.co.uk followed by Opentrolley.com.sg or Acmamall.com. Because of the Delivery Charges to Singapore, Amazon.com’s prices actually made the prices much more higher as compared to the rest.

Events Like MPH & Borders Book Sale

These events are usually held like twice a year in Singapore Expos. And if you want really good price, good deals and you like Treasure Hunting then I would suggest you to go for these events.

And what I mean from Treasure Hunting is that you do not really know the Titles offered. But at times, you can find Gems or even just Chicken Bones.

If you have time to go for one event, then I would suggest that you go for the MPH Book Sale. Reason: Books are usually offered around $8 and if you are expecting that these titles are from those ancient times, you will be glad this is not the case. You may be even surprised that very new titles that usually cost around $30 – $40 per book is only at $8.

This price even beats those major bookstores and online bookstores!

My experience with Borders Book Sale is that they only offer 15-20% off those usual titles. So may not be that attractive and worth going at all.

My Verdict: Go For MPH Book Sale! And there’s one coming up – June 25 to June 27. And for really good deals, go on the first day. There’s where all the Gems can be located before the Saturday crowd!

So What You Should Know In Getting Good Deals For Books:

• For Major Bookstores – go for Borders and signup for their Discount emails.
• For Online Bookstores – go for BookDepository.co.uk
• For Sales Event – check out Singapore Expo website and go for the MPH Book Sale.

I guess one of the positive note about Gothere.sg is that it saves you money in travelling and more on walking, therefore, on the other hand, some routes may not be feasible during rainy days. Bus services are highly recommended but may not be available in there as yet.

I have been hosting my own websites for the past 6 years and have gone through quite a few Singapore web hosting companies.

There are other good US-based web hosting companies, but I notice that when you experience errors or problems with your website, you will want to get a solution fast. That’s why my first choice of web hosting companies has to be in Singapore.

The Small Bad Experience

The very first web hosting company that I used, surprisingly, is Vodien.com, and I can say the experience was a small bad at then.

Reason being: The Web Hosting Package that they offer me was way too expensive (at least 2.5 times more) as compared to other web hosting companies.

The only positive note that they gave me was that they are prompt to reply to my requests and one of their partners (younger than me) was very good with their customer service, which we like, and therefore my partners and I did up our first logo and eventually our first web hosting with them despite the high cost.

But sad to say, our first website failed, partnership dissolved and I decide to go solo… So after being with Vodien for a year, we stopped hosting with Vodien and I moved on on my own and with other cheaper web hosting. 

The next Singapore web hosting company that I used was GlobalNox. They are no longer doing business and a brief history about them is that a 13 year old kid was running the business. I created my next business logo with them, and later realized that the design was actually copycat from a free source and with a tiny bit of modification. The web hosting package was definitely cheaper and the customer service was pretty good. I got the boss’ mobile number and make sure he replies me when there’s errors! Ha, talk about being an arrogant customer!

Getting a cheap deal does come with its negative experience price tag. My site was constantly down and took a few days to get it up. Talk about losing time and online exposure. So after two years being with them, GlobalNox decided to fold up as well and I have to move on.

For the next 2.5 years, my sites are being hosted with another Web Hosting company, which I will not name it here. The deal is rather good – $5/month for 100MB hosting with unlimited MySQL databases and unrestricted access to wide range of tools and services included in the package. The Downside: it’s still the same, when the server is down, it takes long to be back, but still much better than GlobalNox. Though so, I still keep the hosting with them. 

The Big Good Experience

This year itself, I decide to expand on my sites and use my own name as the next domain name. I also decide to search for the possible new and good web hosting company. Sad to say, other companies are still offering expensive packages.

Then one fine day, Vodien came to my mind all a sudden. I went to their site – they have upgraded, revamped their site and change their packages for the very good.

Like How Good?

Still remember my previous package? $5/month for 100 MB hosting with unlimited MySQL databases?

Now, see what Vodien is offering for their Standard Plan:

• 5GB of Hosting Space (compare this to 100MB)
• Unlimited (or 999) MySQL databases (ok, same as my previous)
• Unrestricted use of tools and services like the very Famous Fantastico, which you can easily set up your WordPress blog (this service is no longer supported by my previous)
• Faster upload speed during FTP session (what this mean is that, if you need to upload files to your website, you will use FTP. My previous is slower than Vodien by a few times)
• Cron Task (my previous also offers this). This service is good especially if you are running your own niche stores like BANS or StoreStacker and want to update your site regularly and automatically.
• The Customer Service still remain good as it is before. They will respond within 2 hours during normal office hours.

I am paying $5/month for my previous package. So guess how much will I be paying for a 5GB of hosting? If doing a as per it is calculation. 5GB is 5000MB, which is 50 times more than 100MB. So I must be paying towards $250/month?

If you are nodding your head. Guess what… if you take up a 1 year hosting with them, its only $10/month or $8/month for a 2 year hosting package.

If you are asking yourself, why will I need a 5GB hosting space when my need is low? Guess what again.. I have asked them if I am running multiple sites and want to host them together under one account, the answer is a big yes!

If you are running 20 money-making websites, with the previous packages, you have to take up 20 hosting plans. This will cost you $100/month. Now with Vodien, you are only paying the most $10/month. Which is a better deal now… You decide…

I was planning to post this yesterday with all the interest rates for savings and fixed deposits being offered by all the local banks but after going through just one of the banks, I realize something…

By the time I consolidated all the data here and present to you, some of my rates, especially for the fixed deposits area, could already be outdated. Not fresh means not beneficial to you.

That’s why I kept this post till today, after I have dug through my memory banks and done my search on Google – and I will like to present to you a good website to turn to for the latest financial products – www.Qotion.sg.

If my memory never fails me, Qotion was set up back in 2006 with their initial offerings of the various Credit Cards available in the market. I was promoting a credit card affiliate program for the US market back then, so while testing out my competitors on Google, I came upon this wonderful website.

Now in 2008, Qotion has more to offer. They have now expanded to share all the latest offerings and rates for:

This site is definitely interesting! If you need some information to increase your financial knowledge, there is a small section to explore as well. If you need more, there’s always my site to turn to, right?

For me, I will know that whenever I need to get a quote or to make comparison on some of the products (even on the latest mobile plans) and rates, I do not need to multi-surf all the banks’ website, take notes and make the comparison. With Qotion, all the information you need is laid out in a simple and concise manner.

This will definitely save you and me a lot of time and efforts!

That’s cheaper than Berkshire.sg by $6.24. Wow! That’s quite a good discount! Even if we do add in the Registered Mail cost into it, the final value is still at $37.31. Cheaper than Berkshire.sg (even before the delivery cost is added).

But there’s an area whereby Berkshire.sg may win over Opentrolley is that Berkshire.sg has more self-collection points but this is no big deal as you can still opt for the Registered Post option and have the postman sent right to your doorstep or collect from the nearest Post Office.
